Originality
Create rather than imitate: write the standard, form the vertical, and keep the record afterwards instead of adopting somebody else’s.
Originating is preferred to acquiring, and the reason is arithmetic rather than pride. Convening produces founders, operating groups produce companies, and formation produces verticals; each of those is a source of positions that no auction sets the price of. A group whose first move is to buy has to pay a fee for the same access, and pays it to somebody who learned the market on somebody else’s money.
It is also why the estate publishes standards it does not own the use of. A format given away under a licence that cannot be narrowed afterwards is a position taken in a category before there is a market to buy into — and the condition under which the format would leave this estate is published beside it, so the claim is checkable rather than asserted.
What it refuses
Buying a position that could have been originated. Origination that costs a fee is the most expensive kind, and a group that starts by buying pays for exactly what this one was paid to learn.
Where it is practised
The group wrote an open specification for machine-readable organisations, gave it away under a permissive licence, and applied it to itself first.
